What We Do
As one of Arkansas’s seven constitutional officers, the Auditor of State plays a very important role in the day-to-day business of state government. The Auditor is the general accountant for the State and serves as the payroll officer for the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The Auditor also processes all state warrants, amounting to millions of checks each year totaling upwards of $20 billion.
In addition to these duties, the Auditor administers Arkansas’s Unclaimed Property program, the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt. Through this free program, the office connects current and former state residents with their unclaimed property, which can include forgotten checking accounts, life insurance proceeds, abandoned safe deposit boxes, stock or mutual fund shares, etc. The Auditor’s office returns between $30 million to $50 million annually to current and former Arkansans.
